Every week or so it seems that we’ve been reporting on more cast, character, and plot additions to ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ a film that we’re starting to assume is at least four hours long—which is why the latest report regarding Zack Snyder’s upcoming superhero showdown film is pleasantly surprising. As it turns out, there will be at least one major Batman character (no, not Bruce Wayne’s parents) who is already dead when this movie begins.

Judging by how many superheroes and events are crammed into ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ it seems like we’re getting more of a ‘Justice League’ prequel than a Batman vs. Superman movie. But there’s one Batman character who will definitely not be appearing in the film, as that person has already been dead for a while prior to the events of this film.

Spoilers ahoy!

According to Badass Digest, the character who is already dead when ‘Batman vs. Superman’ begins is Commissioner Jim Gordon, Batman’s longtime pal from the Gotham Police Department. The original version of the film’s script reportedly featured a deceased Robin, but the newer version has Gordon in his place. The only detail given is a note in the script about a memorial plaque for Gordon, indicating that he has passed away.

We already know that the film will feature the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents, and although Gordon is dead, ‘Batman vs. Superman’ is reportedly not a Gotham-heavy film, featuring only two major scenes in Batman’s city—one of which has Superman arriving to confront Batman. Jim Gordon’s death doesn’t seem to have much bearing on the current slate of DC films at Warner Bros. However, we are curious as to whether Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman for his own solo film(s) or if WB will cast someone younger for a new series of pre-’Justice League’ Batman movies, which would presumably feature the death of Jim Gordon at some point in order to keep with their current continuity.

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
