BOISE (KTVB) - In the wake of the Charleston church massacre, the Confederate battle flag (pictured) is generating new controversy.

A movement has begun to remove the symbol on the South Carolina State Capitol grounds.

And retailers have begun banning sales of items containing the image of the flag.

Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Sears, Kmart and Etsy are among those prohibiting sales.

Boise Mayor Dave Bieter has asked that the Mississippi state flag be taken down from the display in front of Boise City Hall.

City spokesman Mike Journee says that Bieter felt it wasn't appropriate for the city of Boise - with its welcoming reputation and immigrant population - to fly that state flag.

"What it represents is not what we stand for as a city as a city government and what we believe our residents stand for," Journee said.

Journee said the flag will be taken down Wednesday.
