BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise officials gave a break to more than 150 people parked illegally on Christmas Eve. Instead of tickets, they left warnings accompanied by Hershey's candy bars.

The Idaho Statesman reports that Boise Administrative Services manager Craig Croner says that a combination of factors led to the city's decision to have an amnesty day for metered spaces downtown. He says Christmas spirit contributed, but the city also wanted to educate people about a new way to pay parking meters.

People can now increase the amount of time on a Boise parking meter through a smartphone app called Parkmobile. Along with the warnings and candy bars, Boise officials left pamphlets explaining the new service. Croner says the city had left more than 150 pamphlets, candy bars and warnings by noon.
