BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A Boise veteran who had planned to reach the summit of Mount Everest is back in the city after a devastating earthquake in Nepal forced his expedition to return home.

KTVB-TV reports that Marine Staff Sgt. Charlie Linville returned to Boise Monday. Linville had his right leg amputated after being hit by an explosive device during a tour in Afghanistan in 2011.

He's since used his experience to inspire others, with the goal of climbing Mount Everest. The April 25 earthquake killed more than 8,000 people and injured more than 16,000 others, as it flattened mountain villages and destroyed buildings and archaeological sites in the Himalayan region.

Linville and the Heroes Project, the group he was climbing with, stayed in Nepal for two weeks to help with earthquake relief.
