The historic B25J World War II Bomber is here in Twin Falls through June 23!  We had the fun experience of taking a ride today.  For me, it was nothing short of life-changing.

One thing I didn't expect was the presence of World War II Veteran George E. Haney Jr., who -- along with his wife of 71 years (let that number sink in!) -- made the trip come alive that much more.  You can tell this man loves his country, and has great respect for our freedom.

The aircraft wasn't just a model or reissue - the plane that's here at Magic Valley Regional Airport was in combat.  "Maid in the Shade," it's called.  In fact, the plane sports a few 50-caliber bullet holes.  We met several extremely friendly and helpful tour guides who knew just about everything about this aircraft!

Being up in the plane really hit me: the sights, smells, sounds, and vibrations, and even the exact seat you get to sit in... it's all real.  It really happened!  It's one thing to study it, and another entirely to experience it (short of combat, anyway!).

Some quick numbers that may be of interest:

  • The plane has two 1700 horsepower engines, or 3400hp total.  It sounded as much!  In fact, during World War 2 it's reported that several pilots suffered hearing damage from flying this aircraft.
  • TWELVE 50-caliber machine guns on board
  • The plane burns approximately 75 gallons of 100 octane fuel... per hour... per engine.  So 150 gallons an hour.  This thing is a beast.
