Burning Question: Do Idaho People Have an Accent?

In your quiet moments, do you ever wonder about weird stuff? I do and this is proof. I would like to determine once and for all if Idaho people have an accent. This is my quest.

I was not born in Idaho (great news for all native Idahoans). I'm from the Midwest and, strangely, my wife believes that I've developed a Southern accent during my time in the Gem state. Good luck figuring that one out. I swear that I hear what I will refer to as a Southern Idaho drawl. But, is there such a thing?

The first placed I looked for help on this was Yahoo Answers. The "best answer" as voted by readers was this in part.

Most folks in Idaho are more nasal on words like go and snow.

Bingo. That's kind of what I was thinking. There's a more drawn out "o" in words like that.

Boise Public Radio also mentioned that in the Magic Valley, people are more likely to say "real-tor" when referring to someone trying to help them find or sell a home. Right on.

There's a fascinating dialect survey of Idaho from a website that I have no idea what the heck it is. It claims a high percentage of Idahoans pronounce mayonnaise as "may-uh-naze". Sounds about right.

That site also says that Idahoans will emphasize the "jam" in pajamas. The bigger question? Do Idahoans actually WEAR pajamas? Don't tell me. I don't want to know.
