NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — Health officials say a Canyon County man who recently traveled to Mexico has tested positive for the Zika virus.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Southwest District Health on Tuesday confirmed the state's third Zika case this year. District spokeswoman Laurie Boston says none of the cases have been acquired locally. The virus is carried by two types of mosquitoes which don't live in Idaho but are found in hotter climates.

The infected man, who is in his 40s, has not been hospitalized. Most people who acquire Zika don't develop any symptoms, but the virus can lead to severe brain-related birth defects if women are infected during pregnancy. Zika is most commonly spread through mosquito bites but can also be spread through sexual contact.
