Remember all of that hard work and all of those long hours you spent wandering around Old Russia in the Destiny beta? It turns out that every single second of that time was for naught, as Bungie has announced that beta characters will not carry over to the full game when it launches in September.

In a new Bungie Weekly Update, the sad news came with a fitting eulogy to the millions of Guardians that will be lost to the void forever. Bungie says that while this is the first (second for those who played the alpha) time the general public has experienced this loss, it's not the first for the in-studio team.

"What you just experienced is something we’ve been through countless times here at Bungie," the blog reads. "We feel your pain, and then some. Making a game requires iteration and progress. When we reinvent the world where the Guardians live, sometimes we have to leave them behind."

Designer Tyson Greene gives an explanation as to why this is happening, saying, "Since the beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the beta build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst."

We understand that our beta characters never had a chance, and that's probably why we didn't spend all of our free time in the beta build, but we still enjoyed building that character and getting used to it. Luckily, since the beta capped at level eight, it won't take too long to rebuild our beloved Guardians.

Destiny launches Sept. 9 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
