We fully expect Destiny to break all kinds of records after it launches, because a game like this with a pedigree like Bungie's is destined for great things. Apparently Activision didn't want to wait until the game actually hit store shelves to begin bragging about its new blockbuster, as it's announced that Destiny is the most pre-ordered new intellectual property in all of video game history.

While the press release issued by Activision doesn't actually cite how many pre-orders have been received, it does say that it's received over 180 awards and nominations leading up to its launch, that 4.6 million people played the Destiny beta test over the summer, and that "millions are expected to start playing the full game tonight."

"Destiny is the game we've always wanted to make," Bungie president Harold Ryan said in the release. "We've dreamt of this universe for years, so we couldn't be more thrilled to swing open the doors and let fans shape this experience as they tell their unique stories in the game. For us, the next generation of games is all about allowing players to collide and interact with each other as they take on epic, action-packed adventures all their own."

We'll have to see what kind of records are set when the first sales figures come out, but with Destiny launching tonight at 12:01 AM, all we can think about is what kind of character we're going to main.
