Double Fine Lays Off Staff After New Project Was Cancelled
Games Industry reports that San Francisco-based Double Fine Productions had to let 12 of its team members go after its publisher cancelled an unannounced project that the team was developing. Double Fine is the studio that click-and-point/adventure game innovator Tim Schafer made after departing from LucasArts.
"One of our unannounced projects was unexpectedly cancelled by its publisher, forcing us to reduce our staff by 12 people," said. Schafer. "Our remaining projects--Broken Age, Massive Chalice, and Grim Fandango Remastered, were unaffected."
Massive Chalice recently launched on Steam Early Access this month and is expected to have its full-fledged release in spring 2015. Despite these recent setbacks, Double Fine will be showing off Grim Fandango Remastered at the PlayStation Experience convention next month. While Double Fine continues to work hard on its next titles, these layoffs are still a shame considering the high level of quality entertainment that the studio has provided over the years.
