TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)- Voters in several southern Idaho counties have the chance to hit the polls early. In a highly contested election year both nationally and locally election officials are preparing for a busy May 17th Primary election.

Several counties have begun early in person voting as of April 25th in the Magic Valley including Twin Falls, Jerome and Blaine County. Other counties in the region will start May 2nd such as Minidoka, Cassia, Lincoln and Gooding.

The Associated Press reports the struggle inside the Republican Party is once again raising its head in the battle over Idaho's most competitive legislative races in the upcoming May primary election. Far-right candidates have lodged aggressive campaigns against some of the Legislature's key incumbents, arguing that the Republican establishment has strayed from conservative values.

In person voting can be done for two weeks following May 2nd, which is the mandated latest any county can start.
