Twin Falls - The Magic Valley Arts Council in partnership with The Times-News and Independent Television Service (ITVS) announces the Community Cinema Free Film Screening of American Denial at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, February 26, 2015 in the Sligar Auditorium of the Twin Falls Center for the Arts, 195 River Vista Place, Twin Falls.

In the wake of recent events that have sparked a national dialogue on race dynamics, American Denial explores the impact of unconscious bias around race and class. The film is free and open to the public.

Community Cinema is a national documentary screening series that is a groundbreaking public education and civic engagement initiative featuring monthly screenings of documentary films from the Emmy Awardwinning PBS series Independent Lens.

By filmmakers Christine Herbes-Sommers, Llewellyn Smith and Kelly Thomson, American Denial follows the story of foreign researcher and Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal, An American Dilemma (1944) provided a provocative inquiry into the dissonance between stated beliefs as a society and what is perpetuated and allowed in the name of those beliefs.

His inquiry into the United States' racial psyche becomes a lens for modern inquiry into how denial, cognitive dissonance, and unrecognized, unconscious attitudes continue to dominate racial dynamics in American life.

The film’s unusual narrative sheds a unique light on the unconscious political and moral world of modern Americans. American Denial’s experts work to exhume unconscious feelings Americans have about themselves and others. Fascinated by the Myrdal question, the film’s experts reflect on it with emotion and intellectual rigor.
