RUPERT, Idaho (KLIX) A Rupert attorney has been appointed by the governor to fill the shoes of a retired Magic Valley judge.

The office of Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter announced the assignment of Michael Tribe to succeed retired Fifth District Judge Michael Crabtree in Cassia County. Currently, Tribe is legal counsel for Rupert and Heyburn and the Minidoka and Cassia County school districts. The soon to be new judge also serves as deputy prosecutor on felony cases and works as counsel for the coalition of 14 Snake River Plain cities to help resolve water rights disputes.

The range of legal issues Mike has handled – both civil and criminal – has prepared him well to be a district judge,” Governor Otter said in a prepared statement. “He is well-known and respected in his community and committed to administering justice professionally and impartially. I’m confident Judge Tribe will be a credit to the Fifth Judicial District and the people of Cassia County.”

Originally from Virginia, Tribe got his bachelor's degree from Southern Utah University and a law degree from the University of Idaho. Tribe applied for the position after Judge Crabtree retired at the end of May.
