Microsoft has announced that its subsidiary studio, 343 Industries, is making a spiritual successor to last year's Halo: Spartan Assault in the form of Halo: Spartan Strike.

343 Industries announced its newest Halo game today, and it's not Halo 6, but a spin-off of Halo: Spartan Assault, IGN reports. Halo: Spartan Strike we resume the top-down, twin-stick shooting of Spartan Assault and take us to the Halo 2 area of the Flood-filled timeline. The Prometheans from Halo 4 are going to be some of the enemies you fight in this new but familiar shooter. 343 intends on providing even more of a connection between the older events of the Halo franchise to the more recent ones.

Halo: Spartan Strike is due out on Windows Phone, Surface tablets and Windows Desktops (and Steam) starting Dec. 12 for the price of $5.99. Since Halo: Spartan Assault was initially released in a similar manner, we have a feeling that Spartan Strike will eventually come to Xbox 360 and Xbox One down the line, even if that hasn't been announced just yet.
