We know David Letterman is used to having musicians lip-synch on his show, but Hatsune Miku is the first to do it via hologram.

The Japanese video game virtual idol, Hatsune Miku, made her US telelvision debut with a performance on the 'Late Show with David Letterman,' Kotaku reports. Hatsune Miku has become a pop culture phenomenon in Japan and has been tremendously growing in popularity over the past five years.

Kotaku claims that Miku "blew the roof off the dump," which we're pretty sure it did not. Letterman's audience (who tend to be much older and may not be familiar with Japanese pop culture), had a rather lukewarm reception for a pre-recorded performance of a hologram singing in vocaloid English that wasn't even as good as the Japanese original version of the song. Look closely at the audience at the bottom of the screen when Miku's band starts and count the bald spots. Whether or not the song was redone in English, we legitimately couldn't even tell what Miku was singing -- Letterman didn't really care either.

Hatsune Miku was on Letterman to promote an art show dedicated to the character opening in New York (that just sounds wrong).
