KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) — A central Idaho homeowners association is taking steps to eliminate a poisonous plant that has been killing elk in the area.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports that the Valley Club Owners Association in Hailey has prohibited the planting of yews. The exotic shrubs are commonly used in landscaping, but they are toxic to many animals and to humans.

Nichols Property management oversees the Valley Club properties. Owner Karl Nichols says the association has strongly encouraged its 99 property owners to remove any existing yew plants.

Nichols says the rule can be enforced by requiring the association to approve any significant landscaping. At least 20 elk are believed to have died in the Wood River Valley from eating yew plants this winter.
