Idaho Named One of the Top Summer Road Trip Destinations
If you've been planning to take a summer road trip to one of America's premier destinations, I have good news: You won't have to go far to get there. Idaho is one of the top states for summer road trips.
Using 20 key metrics, WalletHub compared all 50 states to identify the ones that offer road travelers the most fun for the least cost. Their data set ranges from average gas prices to the quality of roads to the number of attractions.
Here's how Idaho ranked as a Road Trip Destination (1 = Best, 25 = Average):
- 6th – Lowest Price of Three-Star Hotel
- 24th – Vehicle Miles Traveled per Capita
- 5th – Car Thefts per 100,000 Residents
- 5th – Number of Scenic Byways
- 17th – Lowest Price of Camping
- 11th – Driving Laws Rating
- 7th – Population Density
- 7th – Violent Crime Rate per 100,000 Residents
In 2014, domestic and international travelers collectively spent $644.9 billion on leisure travel. And they’re at it again. About 85 percent of Americans--up 13 percent since 2014--are planning a summer vacation, and nearly 90 percent of them will be on the road.
Here's WalletHub's Top 10 Summer Road Trip Destinations:

Personally, I think they ranked the states without actually experiencing them. Numbers are one thing, but how did Nevada land at number two on the list?
I've driven all over Nevada--and lived there for almost 20 years--and trust me, there's not much to look at. Once you've seen the high desert and some sagebrush, that's about it. Idaho is, by far, a much more beautiful state.
