Idaho Woman Killed Preparing to Flee Wild Fire
KAMIAH, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho County Sheriff's Department says an estimated 30 homes were lost to a wildfire expanding quickly east of Lewiston.
Authorities say 70-year-old Cheryl Lee Wissler of Adams Grade died Friday evening when she fell and sustained a head wound while preparing to evacuate. The blaze is surrounding the small town of Kamiah and burned to the edge of the Clearwater River, directly across the water from downtown.
The blaze is one of dozens taxing fire crews across the Pacific Northwest. Wildfires have destroyed homes in Oregon and Idaho, forced thousands of evacuations throughout the region and left at least 9,000 people without power in Washington.
