KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho State Police patrol vehicle sustained about $1,500 in damage in a central Idaho collision with an elk.

Authorities tell the Idaho Mountain Express that Trooper Dan Choma wasn't injured when his 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe collided with a cow elk about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday. The collision occurred on state Highway 75 south of Ketchum near East Fork Road.

Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey says the elk wandered onto the highway and died on impact when Choma couldn't stop in time. Ramsey says it's another reminder that elk are moving and motorists need to pay attention, especially at dawn and dusk.
