JEROME, Idaho (KLIX) Travel is about to change in Jerome as state transportation officials begin planning a new interstate interchange.

The Idaho Transportation Department announced this morning a plan to completely rebuild the Interstate 84 interchange to make it more convenient and safer.  ITD has created a special website for the project as it moves forward, which you can access at this LINK. According to ITD, the overpass was built in 1966 and has an average of 13,000 cars and trucks pass over it every day.

ITD's plan is to redesign the interchange to make it safer, increase traffic flow efficiency, reduce travel time, improve the on/off ramps, and improve movement on Lincoln Avenue and other roadways. “We want to build an interchange that reflects the needs and interests of the local community,” said ITD Project Manager Mike Scott in a prepared statement. The plan is to also add pedestrian and bicycle travel along with reducing the potential for collisions at intersections in the area.

A series of meetings will be held for the public as the project moves forward.
