LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — A city in northern Idaho is hoping to buy back burial plots as the local cemetery runs out of room.

KLEW-TV reports that Lewiston Parks and Recreation Director Tim Barker says there are only 300 burial lots left at Normal Hill Cemetery.

Lewiston officials are working with the Association of Idaho Cities to introduce legislation that would allow municipalities to buy back or reclaim cemetery lots. The bill would let the city buy empty lots from the owners at a discounted price. If the lot has been empty for more than 50 years, the city can try to reclaim it.

About 20,000 people have been laid to rest at the cemetery.
