LEWISTON, Utah (AP) — Police say a man is hospitalized after he was shot in a bizarre series of events near the Utah-Idaho border.

Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen says a witness saw the man driving erratically before crashing into a natural gas regulating device. Then dispatchers received reports of gunshots. Jensen couldn't say for sure who fired the shots or whether any officers were present. Police are investigating it as a "critical incident involving a government employee." Jensen says they are considering the possibility that the man shot himself or was shot before the crash.

He says the natural gas line was spewing fuel by the time a Cache County SWAT team and natural gas crew arrived. Officers found the man unconscious in his car. Doctors say they expect him to survive.
