Megadeth Win Best Metal Performance at 59th Annual Grammy Awards

Congratulations to Megadeth for winning Best Metal Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards!

Best Metal Performance was a stacked category this year. Nominees included Baroness’ “Shock Me,” Gojira’s “Silvera,” Korn’s “Rotting in Vain” and Periphery’s “The Price is Wrong.” However, it was Megadeth’s “Dystopia” that came out victorious, taking home the Grammys’ heaviest award.

As Megadeth approached the stage to accept their long-awaited Grammy Award, the house band actually played Metallica‘s “Master of Puppets.” Awkward! But Dave Mustaine didn’t seem to mind, air-guitaring on his way down the aisle. “Fantastic! Only took 12 tries to get this,” Mustaine said during his acceptance speech. “Last time we were here we were talking to Kenny G and he asked me how many times we were here and he goes, ‘We’ll 11 isn’t that bad.’ I said, ‘How many times did it take you?’ And he said, ’21,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, my god. If it takes 21 times… I don’t know if I’ll live that long.'”

Mustaine continued, “I want to thank Jesus Christ, I want to thank my wife, my children, all the band’s wives and kids, I want to thank our management, our label, our agent, our attorney, our crew, all of you, especially the metal community. It’s a little weird that we ended up being category 69, but somebody’s got a sense of humor.”

This was Megadeth’s 12th Grammy nomination and first win. Korn got their 10th Grammy nod for this year’s ceremony, having won Best Music Video for “Freak on a Leash” in 2000 and Best Metal Performance in 2003 with “Here to Stay.” This was the first time Baroness, Gojira and Periphery were each nominated for a Grammy.
