We are a few days into the 2012 London Olympics, and unlike in 2008, Michael Phelps is not the big swimming news. After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps was one of the most popular athletes in the world. He won an astonishing eight gold medals, but this year has not been the same experience for Phelps. Other US swimmers seem to have surpassed him, and he has yet to medal, finishing in a surprising fourth place in the 400 meter. Yes, it’s only one individual event, but many people expect greatness from Phelps.

He is still one of the world’s best swimmers, so did something happen leading up to these Games? Did his announcement of Olympic retirement come too soon? Did it get inside of his head? Did he not train as hard thinking it would be easy? Not likely.
