The Shaolin comrades, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, are back in the newest trailer for Mortal Kombat X, but not in a way we were expecting.

Courtesy of MAXIM Russia (via Polygon), we have found the newest trailer for Mortal Kombat X, which focuses on the Shaolin monk heroes of the series Liu Kang and Kung Lao. The only problem is that they're no longer the heroes. No, we don't mean in a "Cassie, Jacqueline, Takeda and Kung Jin are the new heroes" sort of way, but the "oh crap, they're the bad guys now" kind. Sure, that fateful fight between Raiden and Liu Kang near the end of Mortal Kombat 9's story kind of hinted that the Bruce Lee-inspired character was feeling all sorts of jaded for Sindel and Shao Kahn killing just about everyone on the roster, included Jade (spoilers: people die in Mortal Kombat), but we weren't expecting this. Kung Lao and Liu Kang join the ranks of yesteryear's heroes who have been pulled by Shinnok and Quan Chi down to NetherRealm after death, where they are now eternal slaves to the former elder god.

This new trailer for MKX showcases Raiden encountering his two lost soldiers, mentioning that he looked to both of them as his owns sons, which could be true considering how long of a journey it has been for all of the Earthrealm fighters. But man, those Fatalities were something fierce, especially Liu Kang's.

Mortal Kombat X will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on April 14. Unfortunately, High Voltage Software's ports of MKX for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been delayed to the Summer.
