MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho (KLIX) – Two police officers risked their lives to save a woman who was trapped inside a burning house Monday night in Mountain Home.

After being called to investigate reports of domestic disturbance a little after 7 p.m. Monday at 1010 E. Jackson Street, officers were informed that smoke was coming from inside the house. It also was brought to the officers’ attention that a woman not able to walk was asleep inside one of the bedrooms.

According to police, Officer Brian Thomas entered the smoke-filled house and crawled on his hands and knees, searching each room for the woman. He eventually found her in a back bedroom. Sgt. Russell Griggs entered the home with a fire extinguisher, the woman was placed into a wheelchair, and the officers brought her safely out of the house.

Chief Mark Moore: 'These officers put the safety of another person ahead of their own...'

The woman was treated for smoke inhalation, according to the police department, but refused further medical treatment. Both Griggs and Thomas were taken to St. Luke's Elmore Medical Center, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and later released.

Cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but the incident is under investigation. The family living in the home was displaced due to fire damage, police said, and currently is receiving help from the Red Cross.

“If it were not for the actions of Sgt. Griggs and Officer Thomas, there is a high chance that this woman would not have survived,” Mountain Home Fire Department Chief Mark Moore said in a press statement. “These officers put the safety of another person ahead of their own, and that bravery and professionalism should be recognized.”
