No Upgrade Discount for The Last of Us Remastered

Bad news for those who have purchased the PlayStation 3 version of The Last of Us and were hoping to get a discount on its PS4 Remastered edition.

The advent of the new console generation has triggered a fair amount of upscaled re-releases of last-gen titles. Grand Theft Auto V, Sleeping Dogs and Beyond: Two Souls are all expected to get HD remakes, while 2013’s Tomb Raider has already been upgraded with its Definitive Edition. Paying full price for the same game with a higher resolution might seem like a waste for some, so publishers have been offering discounts for those who own the original title and want to upgrade to next-gen. Battlefield 4 owners were able to upgrade to the PS4 edition of the game from the PS3 version for only $9.99, and the next-gen Minecraft will cost only $5 for owners of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The Last of Us is getting an HD release later this month, and despite these previous sales, Sony will not be offering a discount to owners of the original PS3 game.

Back in April, Eric Monacelli of Naughty Dog, the game’s developer, was asked on the European PlayStation Blog about the possibility of a discount for second time buyers of the game. Monacelli responded, “We're looking into the business model for all this and will post about this once we have input from all regions." However, a recent comment on the same blog confirms that there will be no discount. When asked about Monacelli’s statement, Sony’s Fred Dutton answered, “Alas, there is no upgrade discount.”

The reaction on the comments section was swift and brutal, with gamers stating, “I will most likely never purchase this,” "this is the worst customer loyalty I’ve seen in a long time” and “it’s a slap in the face of the people who stood behind Naughty Dog and ordered this game day one.”

It’s worth noting that The Last of Us Remastered will be sold at $50 instead of the usual price of $60, but the $10 cut may not be enough for some fans who see this as a betrayal of their loyalty to Sony and Naughty Dog. The Last of Us Remastered launches on July 29 exclusively on PlayStation 4.
