SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — A north Idaho sheriff's officer says a 3-year-old boy who apparently climbed into a vehicle by himself at his home has been found dead. Bonner County sheriff's Capt. Ror Lakewold says the cause of death is under investigation but heat was a major contributing factor.

Two dogs also died Thursday in the vehicle in the small community of Spirit Lake. KHQ-TV in Spokane, Washington, reports that Lakewold says the parents were in their house at the time and the child wasn't locked in the vehicle. The officer says the boy apparently got into the vehicle with the dogs. He reportedly was found by his mother.

The National Weather Service says temperatures reached the low 80s in north Idaho on Thursday. Lakewold didn't immediately return an Associated Press message left with the sheriff's office.
