This Day in Rock History: October 27

On this day in rock history, Bruce Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week. Arriving on the heels of Born to Run, released just two months earlier, this historic moment finally launched the talented singer-songwriter into rock’s stratosphere.

Gary Tallent, a future collaborator with Springsteen in the E Street Band, was born on this date – as was K.K. Downing, of Judas Priest. The Sex Pistols released their one and only album, while Motorhead followed up with an impressive sophomore release in Bomber. The latter set the stage for huge success in the ’80s for Lemmy Kilmister and company.

Then there was Johnny Winter‘s Second Winter, which featured a career-making set of blue-rock gems in a still-unusual format. The project was actually released as a rare three-sided set, after an inspired session in Nashville produced more material than could fit on a single album – but not enough for a double album, either.
