Imbuing the traditional and nostalgia-inspiring looks of Link, Samus and Princess Peach with the sleek, sultry style of our favorite Umbra Witch was no easy task, but Nintendo and Platinum Games were able to pull it off (or at least unbutton it a bit).

Platinum Games has posted an in-depth look at the character creation process that went into making Bayonetta 2's Nintendo-themed costumes. Yong-Hee Cho designed the Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Samus and Link costumes for Bayonetta, and we're glad to hear his insight about the project. Cho said this all started when lead designer Hideki Kamiya randomly walked up to his desk and said, “Hey Cho. Draw Bayonetta in a Princess Peach outfit for me. Thanks," which is hilariously random when you think about it.

Surprisingly, we get to hear more about the character design process. Instead of the Varia Suit, Kamiya wanted the original Metroid's Power Suit, which was tough to sketch because of how limited the NES' graphics were (he had to base his designs off of its promotional and concept art).

The most surprising thing about Cho's creative process? He was told by Nintendo to unbutton the Link Tunic's top and show more more skin:

"When I gave the designs to Nintendo to check, I was worried about how “kid-friendly” Bayonetta looked. Like, I didn’t think it’d be a good idea to show too much cleavage, you know… but when Nintendo looked at my Link design, they actually suggested to me to open up her top a little more… Wow."

That is how Princess Peach goes from Mushroom Kingdom royalty to an Umbra Witch:
