The PlayStation 4 just reached a big milestone in terms of its units sold across the globe.

Gematsu reports that Sony Computer Entertainment has officially sold 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles around the world. Since it launched in Nov. 2013, the PS4 has been doing extremely well -- it was continuously sold out throughout stores in North America during its first six months of release. During this past holiday season, over 4.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold. Sony also notes that PlayStation Plus subscriptions reached 10.9 million as of Jan. 2.

To put things in perspective, Xbox shipped roughly 10 million Xbox One consoles by the time it reached its one year anniversary (it also launched in Nov. 2013). Microsoft has yet to release its sales numbers for the holiday season. Xbox recently launched the Xbox One in Japan and it was met with abysmal sales. Competition brings out the best in everybody, and those Xbox One bundles Microsoft sold throughout the holiday season definitely helped lessen the gap between the two next-gen consoles.
