I'm not normally a very sentimental person. Please pretend to be shocked by that revelation. But, I can't get through Father's Day Weekend without thinking about my dad.

I won't write his life story here, but there are a few things I'd like to share. First of all, my dad was patriotic. We had an American flag flying outside of our house every day I can remember. That's not a surprise if you knew him as he served as a Military Policeman in Okinawa at the end of WW2.

My dad didn't do anything heroic that I'm aware of - at least not in a way that the rest of the world thinks of heroes. But, he never missed any of my Little League games and coached many of them.

He worked over 25 years as an postal worker which brought with it several facts. 1. He worked long hours, especially during the holidays. 2. He always came home ticked off whenever the government increased the price of stamps since people always took out their anger on the guys selling the stamps instead of the bean counters that made the decision.

Oh, and my dad loved to fish.

It's funny how you take things for granted when you're a kid. That changes when you get older and your dad is gone.

My father passed away on June 24, 2011 after a long fight with cancer. Cancer sucks.

If your dad is still around this Father's Day, make sure you spend some time with him. Take it from me. There will come a day when you can't and you will wish you could.
