The Stooges’ ‘Search & Destroy’ Covered By Talib Kweli

So often we credit Iggy and the Stooges as a major inspiration on punk that it’s easy to overlook just how far-reaching their influence has spread. It’s even extended to hip-hop, where Talib Kweli has recorded a cover of their ‘Search & Destroy.’

This isn’t a case of a hip-hop artist rapping over a sample of a classic rock song, but a full-fledged band performance, with a solid four-piece combo charging away as he replicates Iggy Pop‘s sneering vocals (while managing, unlike Iggy, to keep his shirt on). In the interview segment, Kweli discusses what the song means to him.

“When it first came out,” he told the Boombox‘s ‘Off the Record‘ video series. “It was fresh and new and sounded like nothing that was out before it. Now you see that song being used in a lot of movies…as a song that represents that era of music. I grew up hearing that song in movie soundtracks. I wasn’t around when that song first dropped. So that song has always been very cinematic to me.”

‘Search & Destroy’ was first issued on Iggy & the Stooges’ 1973 classic ‘Raw Power.’ It has featured prominently in such films such as ‘Almost Famous’ and ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.’
