Today In Comics History: The First Appearance of Hal Jordan, Green Lantern!
On this day in 1959, issue #22 of DC Comics' Showcase appeared on newsstands. Three years earlier, in issue #4, the anthology series had introduced a radically new take on the company's super-speedy Flash character, and in doing so, laid the groundwork for a full-fledged revival of the superhero genre. In the time since, Showcase alternated through a variety of new features (Manhunters; The Flash; Challengers Of The Unknown; The Space Ranger; Rip Hunter, Time Master; Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane; Adam Strange), but with #22, it once again returned to the well of iconic properties, taking the name of a Golden Age hero and lending it to an all-new character. The original Green Lantern of the 1940s was a guy who channeled mystical "green flame" powers through a talking lantern (and a ring made from metal that he cut out of said lantern), and wore an eye-popping multi-hued outfit that looked like it was assembled by a color-blind tailor on his last day before retirement.

We’re a little over a week away from the biggest movie of the summer, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In less than ten years, Marvel has built a powerful brand in Hollywood thanks to their great casting, sharp writing, and an ability to distill decades of comic books down to fun, accessible adventures. A big part of that translation process is the look of their movies, and particularly the look of their characters. And that’s all about costumes, which is a particular specialty of Marvel’s. Between Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the rest, they’ve got some sharp-dressed heroes.

Warner Bros Announces Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman Movies & More
At a presentation to investors on Wednesday morning, Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara unveiled his studio's blockbuster movie slate for the next few years through to 2020, finally confirming the titles for an ambitious number of movies based on DC Comics superhero properties. The announcement confirms that we will finally see a long-awaited Wonder Woman movie in 2017. Gal Gadot will reprise the role after 2016's Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The announcement also includes the expected Justice League movie -- and a sequel -- the previously announced Suicide Squad movie, and pictures starring Justice League members Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. This means DC now has one superhero movie in the works with a female lead, and three with non-white leads.

Why So Serious: Warner Bros. Reportedly Orders ‘No Jokes’ In New DC Comics Movies
Comics fans have become well acquainted with the notion that sometimes, creative people learn the wrong things from successes. It's why certain comics have been dominated for going on 30 years by a "dark" and "mature" sensibility that often comes off as grim, self-serious and overcooked. Well, get ready for that way of thinking to make its way to movie theaters very soon. According to a report at Hitfix, Warner Bros. has a strict rule for its upcoming DC Comics movies: "No jokes."

This week, Chris follows up on a comment from a previous episode by taking a look at the idea of legacy in Green Lantern, and how it compares to how "legacy" was used as the driving force in The Flash -- and how it completely failed to work.

We all know that Marvel Studios has its movies planned out through 2028 (not an exaggeration, a real date 14 years in the future), but what about DC Entertainment? All we've heard so far is a set date for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (May 2016, pushed back from summer 2015) and some nebulous stuff about a Justice League movie, a Justice League Dark movie and some other projects. Well, according to entertainment reporter Nikki Finke's website, things may get a whole lot clearer at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Finke has was she says is DC and Warner Bros.' movie schedule (though "a lot is in flux") through May 2018. And it includes a solo Wonder Woman movie.

Comic-Con 2014 is just around the corner, which means lots of big announcements are on the way. While Marvel has certainly been on top of their game as far as carefully planning the phases of their superhero properties, we've wondered exactly what DC and Warner Bros.' game plan was for the next few years, now that they've got 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice' in motion. Now, new reports have emerged regarding WB's upcoming slate of comic book movies, including 'Justice League,' a 'Wonder Woman' solo movie, and a Green Lantern and Flash team-up.

Justice League, assemble! Well, it has... allegedly.
