‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ Will Have an Extended Edition
‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘ is due out December 14, but we now already know that there will be an extended edition of the film after it hits Blu-ray and DVD, set to be released sometime in third quarter of 2013.
This news (from Movies.com) comes after news that Peter Jackson will be filming an additional movie (‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘), which we still don’t know if it will include footage originally intended for either of the first two films. Color us a little nervous.
Though we may be happy once we’re in the theater, from the outset this return to the shire has been troubling in that originally Jackson wasn’t going to direct it, and it was supposed to be two movies. Following the blueprint of the original trilogy makes sense to a certain degree in terms of marketing and all that, but ‘The Hobbit‘ is the shortest book in the franchise, and now is being stretched over three films with all likely to have extended editions. Perhaps Jackson and company have earned this with the goodwill from the original trilogy, but the material – even with padding from other J.R.R. Tolkien material – sounds extra thin. We’ll know for sure when ‘The Hobbit’ hits theaters this December, and when the extended edition hits in the third quarter of 2013.
