Tribe Evaluates Idaho Canyon as Possible Condor Habitat

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — The Nez Perce Tribe is considering Idaho's Hells Canyon as a possible site for the reintroduction of California condors.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that the tribe received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to assess whether that area or other canyons would make a good condor habitat.

Nez Perce wildlife program project leader Angela Sondenaa says tribal biologists will look for wide ledges, deep caves and big game animal carcasses to feed on. She says the project is the first step toward reintroducing condors in the area.

The tribe plans to evaluate the region for about 18 months. Condors are the largest bird in North America, with a wingspan of almost 10 feet and a weight of up to 25 pounds.
