TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — County commissioners in south-central Idaho are vying for new state funds to help improve the region's public defense system.

Idaho lawmakers designated $5.5 million earlier this year to improve how the state provides legal representation to those who can't afford their own attorney. The funding is designed to help offset the cost of complying with upcoming stricter standards — which will be created by the state's Public Defense Commission.

The Times-News reports that Twin Falls County is eligible to receive nearly $320,000. However, how much money the county will actually get will depend on how many other counties apply. The Public Defense Commission has 60 days to approve or deny applications. Money will be distributed in the fall.
