Twin Falls Suicide Rate 3rd Highest In Idaho
This is one of those stories you wish you would never have to write. It's not good news, but it's a necessary fact that we must confront. The suicide rate in Idaho, and Twin Falls specifically, is troubling.
The most recent Suicide in Idaho fact sheet breaks down the statistics and it shows that Twin Falls suicide rate is the 3rd highest in Idaho. Even worse, it's rising. The stated number is 22.1 for every 100,000 people. That means we only trail Lewiston and Coeur d' Alene in the rate our friends and neighbors are choosing to end their lives.
While we normally associate this tragedy with teens, the numbers show that every age group in Idaho is at risk, including the elderly.
It does no good to just restate statistics. What can we do to turn this trend around? There's no easy answer, but there are actions you can take. First, head to the Idaho Suicide Prevention website and download bumper stickers, wallet cards and posters to raise the awareness that help is available.
Make sure people in your circle know they can call or text this number any day any time:
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention provides great tips on warning signs to watch for. Any mention from your friend or family of being a burden to others or experiencing unbearable pain is a sign they need help. Job loss, divorce or the passing of a loved one can also lead down this very dangerous road.
Idaho is known for being one of the most at-risk states for suicide. This is something we have to change and we have to change it now. One life lost is too many.
