SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials say a Utah teacher carrying a concealed firearm at school was struck by fragments from a bullet and a porcelain toilet when her gun accidently fired.

Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley says authorities initially believe the sixth-grade teacher accidently shot herself in the leg while in a faculty bathroom at an elementary school in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville. He says they now believe the bullet struck a toilet, causing it to explode.

The incident occurred shortly before class started Thursday at Westbrook Elementary School, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville. No one else was injured. Horsley says the teacher, Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery, was carrying the weapon legally with a concealed firearm permit, which Utah law allows in public schools. No phone number was listed for Ferguson-Montgomery.
