This is a legitimate scientific question, thank you and Tony McCammon from the University of Idaho knows the answer.

So the headline was a little fabricated, but I could not resist. Here's the weird part, people actually put Viagra in their Christmas tree water to try to see if it helped preserve it better. Isn't Viagra expensive?

Any ways, Tony McCammon is from the University of Idaho and is the Horticulture Educator for the Magic Valley.  He came in today to answer the age old question: Will Viagra preserve your Christmas tree? He'll also help you care for your other Christmas plants!

Take it away Tony:

Let's Review:

  • Viagra and your Christmas tree: BAD
  • Luke warm water and your Christmas tree: GOOD!
  • Once you get your Christmas tree, put it in water ASAP!
  • Do the shake test. Shake it a bit before you buy it. If the needles fall off, move on.
  • When you get the tree home cut off at least 1/4 inch from the base to open it up to more easily soak up the water.
  • Turn down the heat at home so your Christmas tree doesn't dry out.
  • No direct sunlight, it will only dry it out.
