For the first time in many years, I chose not to get a flu shot heading into the winter. Like many states, California is suffering the wrath of a couple of different germ-spreading bugs that began wiping people out with many symptoms before the holidays and are still not letting up.

Bird Flu, RSV, Norovirus, COVID-19, and one of the nastiest Influenza strains in years are all making headlines across California almost nightly. While Bird Flu is less common in the United States presently, these other illnesses are sickening people on the daily throughout the country.

If you're going to be traveling soon, especially on a plane, take some precations to avoid these dreadful bugs that are currently everywhere it seems.

Mine and my son's symptoms began a few days before Christmas. Some mild sneezing and a scratchy throat caught my attention around December 23, the day before my nine-year-old boy went on the holiday, two-week break. We're now a week into January, and both of us are still clearing mucus out of our bodies; it's an absolutely brutal flu.

My wife got a flu shot and miraculously didn't come down with it despite our son coughing in her face for four to five straight days before fevers hit. My son got the worst of it, a fever that came and went for nearly three day, the chills, body aches, sneezing, and a cough that is just now beginning to subside.

I missed some work with the same symptoms, but mine didn't fully attack my body until New Year's Eve when my fever ramped up. Norovirus is the one that's currently taking center stage in the state, with even nastier symptoms such as excessive vomiting and diarrhea.

If you're going to be traveling soon, especially on a plane, take some precations to avoid these dreadful bugs that are currently everywhere it seems.
