Before Ben Affleck tackles the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder's 'Batman vs. Superman,' shooting later this year, he'll be seen in David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' alongside 'The World's End' star Rosamund Pike. A new look at the film, hitting theaters October 3, has graced the cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly issue, shot by Fincher himself and revealing just how crazy in love (emphasis on crazy) Affleck's character is with his wife.

Much like the new image (shown below) of Affleck entwining himself around the cold corpse of his deceased wife, Fincher is attracted to these types of avante-garde characters, having previously directed Rooney Mara in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and the deliciously sadistic Kevin Spacey in Netflix's 'House of Cards.' 'Gone Girl' features his two new leads as Nick and Amy Dunne, two unemployed magazine writers whose relationship turns sour when they move to the Midwest from New York. Once there, Amy disappears on the couple's fifth wedding anniversary and is presumed to be dead (but is she?) -- and Nick is the prime suspect. As Fincher told EW of his characters, "I don’t know what ‘likable’ is."

While based on the Gillian Flynn novel, 'Gone Girl' is not a strict adaptation. Having learned from his work on 'Dragon Tattoo,' Fincher admits his crew "may have been too beholden to the source material." So even readers of the book are sure to find some new twists to enjoy.

Check out the new look at 'Gone Girl,' shot by Fincher himself, below, and pick up the latest issue of EW on stands January 9.
