Bedtime stories aren't as common nowadays since humans started becoming addicted to smartphones and other devises. Book pages and reading lights have sadly been replaced by reels of artificial intelligence, videos made by influencers, news alerts, and memes.
There was a time, not long ago, when parents read stories to their children to help get them to fall asleep quicker. Some books are great at making kids sleepy, and others have the opposite effect.
One story I recall I was introduced to at about age eight or so was about a woman who wore a green ribbon around her neck, and it wasn't until the final page of the short story when I learned what the purpose of the ribbon was. The story has had a lifelong impact on me.
The Tale Of The 'Green Ribbon' Continues To Spook Readers 40 Years Later

The tale is about a man and woman who meet and get married. The woman wears a green ribbon around her neck the entire time the two are together, despite the man's wishes to have his lady remove it.
The woman ends up getting ill and tells her husband he can finally remove the ribbon. When he does, he gets the shock of his lifetime. One video version of the tale that was first introduced in 1984 by author Alvin Schwartz has racked up over 17 million views in a few months, and is a good indicator that a lot of people had previous knowledge of the story.
