A horrible anniversary is approaching that marks one of Idaho's darkest days. A northern Idaho family was tormented, tortured, and murdered in such a manner that it terrified a community for weeks before the perpetrator was captured.

The 20th anniversary of an unthinkable triple murder and kidnapping that took place eight miles west of Coeur d'Alene is this week. On May 16, 2005, the stuff of nightmares became reality for a stepfather, mother, and two young kids after a stranger entered their home in the middle of the night and brought hell with him.

Joseph Edward Duncan died from brain cancer in prison in 2021 at age 58 for the horrible crimes he committed against the Groene family that spring night 20 years ago. Shasta Groene was the sole survivor and had to witness her three family members get executed before she was kidnapped and sexually abused by Duncan, according to details shared by justice.gov.

The murders committed by Duncan sent shockwaves through the northern Idaho community, which gathered for numerous vigils in the days following the unspeakable incident. The true crime story has been featured in countless articles, podcasts, documentaries, and prime-time news shows.

Duncan pleaded guilty to the family slayings and was sentenced to death row in 2008. Idaho police rescued Shasta after Duncan took her out to eat at an area restaurant and one of the staffers alerted authorities.
