Man Is Left Spitting Bullets Sues When Gun Range Lets Women Shoot for Free
What started out as a harmless promotion to make a gun range more appealing to the fairer sex has now shifted into a full-blown lawsuit because a Maryland police officer has his panties in a wad, screaming claims of “reverse sexism.”
Derrick Hunter has filed a lawsuit for $200,000 with his attorney, Jim Bell, which states that one Monday last year at Maryland Small Arms Range in Upper Marlboro he was forced to pay to fire off some practice rounds, but because it was “Ladies Day,” women there got to shoot for free.
“Two ladies came up behind me. He told them they were free, so I asked him, ‘Why did I have to pay to use the range and they didn’t?’” Hunter recalled. “He said, ‘Because they’re women, and you don’t fit the criteria.’”
Hunter filed a complaint with the Prince George Human Relations Commission, which says what happened is against the law.
However, Carl Roy, president of Maryland Small Arms Range, Inc. doesn’t believe what he is doing is illegal since society freely hands out discounts for senior citizens, children and the military.
“I don’t see anything discriminatory about it. It’s a promotion that we run, just as any other business is entitled to run a promotion,” said Roy.
Hunter’s attorney says that Roy’s “Ladies Day” promotion is clear cut discrimination. “If they made him pay more money because he was black, would you still have that way of looking at it?”
