If you kept a close eye on Facebook open the weekend, you got a special surprise from our friends at Indian Creek Plaza!

The first day of skating season on Idaho's only Ice Ribbon was originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 20 but crews worked extra hard to get the pathway and rink ready for 2019. After getting up the dasher boards and laying down sheet rock tape to make sure water doesn't leak under the boards, the crews start spraying water across the cooled concrete in layers until it's about two inches thick.  They also paint the ice white between layers to help keep it from melting.  It take four miles of piping underneath the ribbon to cool the concrete and nearly 19,000 gallons of water to complete the project.

This year, they even got a little help from Canyon Springs High School seniors who helped lay down mats to protect the concrete from skates, cleaned up the class panels and made sure the grounds around the creek were in tip top shape for opening day!

In 2019, they've added a new area for you to warm up while you take a rest from skating. Thanks to Idaho Central Credit Union, Indian Creek Plaza has transformed the stage near the Ice Ribbon to look like just like your living room and dining room do during the holiday season...with added heaters to keep you warm. There's also a small bar on the stage offering beer and local wine.

Something else new to the Ice Ribbon at Indian Creek Plaza? An easy way to teach your kids how to skate or fine tune your basic skating skills. They're offering 4-week group ice skating lessons that will teach students ice safety, how to shake forward in backward, stopping, turning and other skills. The price for the full 4-week skating program is $60 and includes skate rental if you don't have your own skates. Lessons are open to anyone age five and up. To register or learn more click HERE.

By the way, the Ice Ribbon will be open during Friday night's Winter Wonderland Festival if you're ready for your first skate of the year when you come to see Indian Creek lit for the first time in 2019!
