The Christmas season wouldn't quite be the same without delicious snacks. For years, Idaho residents have repeatedly shunned one candy named after the state's most identifiable crop, and I think I might know why.

While Christmas shopping recently, I stopped into a local candy store for some stalking stuffers, because who doesn't love reaching into a large, festively-designed Christmas sock and pulling out chocolate? My kids are big fans of anything gummy, so during the holiday, it's an annual routine to drop $30 to $40 on refilling the candy jar and setting some treats aside for Christmas morning.

Again, I recently tried one and wasn't crazy about it. Come to think of it, the majority of people I know aren't crazy about coconut either.

As I was walking the aisles of the shop, I came across a basket full of Idaho Spud. I realized immediately that I'd never tried one, so I tossed it into my stash. I must not have been paying attention, because I later realized there's coconut in it, which I'm not a fan of at all.

For years, surveys have shown that Idaho's favorite holiday candy IS NOT the Idaho Spud, which might sound dumbfounding to some, but maybe it's due to one ingrediant. A survey taken in 2023 by Hubscore determined that the Reeses's Peanut Butter Cup is the Gem State's favorite during the holiday season.

Do Idahoans dislike coconut so badly that they turned on the Idaho Spud Bar, which turns 107 years old in 2025? Again, I recently tried one and wasn't crazy about it. Come to think of it, the majority of people I know aren't crazy about coconut either.
