The Bald Eagle has been a symbol of the United States for many years, due to its representation of freedom, strength, and independence. It was chosen to be the national bird over 240 years ago, in 1782.
That's a long time to be the nation's bird! Another fun fact, according to PBS, "the earliest known fossil remains that closely resemble the bald eagle date back to about a million years ago."
Bald Eagles have been around a really long time, and it's important to keep them around.
These special birds are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, so remember it's important to maintain a respectful distance and observe them without disturbing their behavior or habitat.
Idaho is home to a significant population of Bald Eagles, particularly during the winter months when they migrate here. But it's a fun summer activity to get out and visit them! There are many suitable habitats for Bald Eagles to build their nests in Idaho, and the state has provided several wildlife refuges and protected areas for them.
