Spooky season is finally here, and that means scary movies are on our TVs, pumpkin spice lattes are in our cups, and we go out of our way to experience the scary and chilling. For some, haunted houses are the way to go, but a frightening hike might be just the thing for others who are more into the outdoors.

Idaho's rugged landscapes also have some of the scariest and most challenging hikes for adventure seekers. These trails, characterized by their remote locations and difficult terrain, offer thrill-seekers an opportunity to experience the outdoors like never before.

One of the most notorious hikes is Hells Canyon, home to the Snake River Trail. At nearly 27 miles one way, this hike navigates along the deepest river gorge in North America. The steep canyon walls and the roaring Snake River below create an intimidating environment, testing even the most experienced hikers. The drops are not for the faint of heart, but the scenery is worth the challenge.

Another eerie expedition is at the Craters of the Moon National Monument. The landscape, with lava fields and volcanic formations, is a once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience. The North Crater Trail leads through an unsettling adventure. The unique geological features give a sense of isolation and awe, especially when hiking during sunset.

Looking for something more advanced? Try the Alpine and Sawtooth Lakes trail in the Sawtooth Range. This 7.8-mile trail, over 1,300 feet, is physically demanding and emotionally thrilling.

If difficult isn't what you're looking for, maybe you'd rather walk through a haunted forest.
