It's been a while since we've had a wave of reality shows that pushed boundaries. The early 2000s were full of them. Remember Joe Millionaire? That's where a $19,000 per year construction worker posed as a millionaire. What about "I Wanna Marry 'Harry'?" That's where they had a Prince Harry lookalike pretend to be the real Prince looking for love. What about "The Swan"? That's where they had four "ugly ducklings" get a bunch of plastic surgery and then compete in a beauty pageant to determine which one became a "swan."

All of those shows have something in common. They were all on FOX, a network that has spent its entire life pushing the boundaries of network television. "Extracted" is their latest entry into the "I can't believe they're doing this" reality competition genre, and one Treasure Valley family will be front and center of the controversy.

The premise of Extracted starts like Survivor or Naked and Afraid. Twelve untrained contestants are sent to the Canadian backcountry of Whistler, British Columbia, where they will try to survive the harsh conditions. But the twist is that they will have two family members in a studio watching everything go down. The contestant in the wilderness does not get to decide if they've had enough, and the other contestants don't vote you out. Instead, the two family members watching will decide when to pull the plug or even send supplies. The last one to survive in the wilderness without their family throwing in the towel on their behalf gets $250,000 for the family. That means the outdoor contestant's fate is in the hands of two family members who are incentivized to keep them in it for a long time.

FOX has said they are using more cameras for Extracted than their Super Bowl coverage, so there will be plenty of footage.

The 12 Weirdest Reality Shows Of All Time

Reality TV has given us some very strange series through the years — and these 12 are the strangest we’ve ever seen.

One of the twelve contestants is from Meridian, and his two brothers will be watching his every move on camera to decide when he's had enough. 35-year-old Mortgage loan officer Jake will do the dirty work while Austin and Justin watch him from an air-conditioned studio with the other families. That means that gamesmanship is happening indoors and outdoors.

"Extracted" premieres on Monday, February 10th at 7pm on FOX.
